CIOS Degree Program Receives Accreditation

The Computer Information and Office Systems Department is proud to announce that its Health Information Management Technology degree program has received accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

The Health Information Management Technology degree program began at JJC in the spring of 2005.

CAHIIM is the accrediting organization for degree-granting programs in health informatics and information management. When a program is accredited by CAHIIM, it voluntarily undergoes a rigorous review process and has been determined to meet or exceed the standards set in cooperation with the sponsoring professional organization the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Students who successfully complete the academic requirements at the associate’s degree level of a health information management program accredited by CAHIIM are eligible to sit for the national Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification exam.

RHITs are health information technicians who ensure the quality of health records by verifying their completeness, accuracy and proper entry into computer systems. They may also use computer applications to assemble and analyze patient data for the purpose of improving patient care. RHITs often specialize in coding diagnoses and procedures in patient records for reimbursement and research.

With experience, the RHIT credential holds strong potential for advancement to management positions.

Employment opportunities exist for RHITs in any organization that uses patient data or health information. Although many RHITs work in hospitals, they also work in other health care settings including office-based physician practices, nursing homes, home health agencies, mental health facilities and public health agencies.
