Test Your Skills at the 9th Annual JJC Web Competition

Interested in testing your web design and development skills or adding professional experience to your resume or college application? Joliet Junior College’s 9th Annual Web Competition is the place to do it.

The competition is open to all high school and college students in the JJC district to create and design their own Web site and compete for cash prizes in three categories: high school, college and group. The deadline to register for the competition is Feb. 13. The deadline to submit web designs is March 9.

Winners will be awarded monetary prizes. The top prize in each of the categories is $200; second prize is $150; third prize is $100. All winners will be given plaques. In May, all participants and their families will be invited to attend a dinner and award ceremony.

Angela Sullivan, associate professor in the Computer Information and Office Systems Department at JJC, said participation in the competition is beneficial for students in many ways.

“The competition is an extracurricular activity that develops skills to help students decide on a career, and it also serves as a positive activity to list on a college application form or a resume,” Sullivan said. “The web design and development industry is not just a trend; Web sites are now a requirement for many businesses and organizations.”

Sullivan, who is a web design and administration instructor and a game design and development instructor, added that there are many career paths within the industry, including:

  • designing web pages
  • developing and programming pages
  • producing graphical elements for an organization’s Web site
  • becoming a web master/administrator
  • working in web securities
  • working in the online gaming industry
