GR2011 Sustainability Fest Kick-Off Event April 21

The college will host a kick-off event for the second Will County Green 2011—or GR2011—Celebrating Sustainability Festival on Thursday, April 21, in the T-Building from 5 to 7 p.m. The college community is invited to attend.

The JJC event will honor Norman and Charlotte Codo of Frankfort with the 2011 Sustainability Award. The Codos have restored 24 acres of farmland to native Illinois prairie and savanna and have quietly supported and encouraged the work of others involved in conservation, organic gardening, and local food initiatives. The image to the right shows part of the restored farmland.

In addition, they have supported JJC and its students over the years by establishing an endowed scholarship in 1989 known as the Norman and Charlotte Codo Art Scholarship. They doubled the endowment amount in 2004. Most recently, they supported JJC by purchasing a key in the Steinway Piano 88 Key Campaign.

Complimentary beverages and snacks will be served. RSVPs for the event should be sent to ckanellakes@fpdwc.org.

The GR2011: Celebrating Sustainability Festival will be held May 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Joliet Public Library – Black Road Branch and the Forest Preserve’s Rock Run Preserve – Black Road Access, located on Black Road between I-55 and Essington Road in Joliet.

The festival will feature recycled artwork, a rock wall, how-to workshops, yoga classes, and other fun, Earth-friendly activities for the whole family. Entertainment will include live music by Trina Hamlin and Keri Noble. Kids’ activities will include bird hikes and fishing pole casting demonstrations.

Also on hand will be eco-friendly exhibits – everything from all-natural body care products and organic cotton clothing to energy-efficient home and green building products. The first 100 to arrive will receive a free tomato plant.

Festival goers are also encouraged to bring books and old electronics for a recycling drive held on-site.

The event is a collaborative effort of the Forest Preserve District of Will County, Joliet Public Library, Will County Land Use – Waste Services Division, Joliet Job Corps, City of Joliet, Joliet Junior College, University of Illinois Extension – Will County, Joliet Park District, Joliet Public School District 86, and Joliet Township Government.
