JJC Journalism Students Take Home Top Honors at State Competition

Joliet Junior College’s student newspaper and five JJC students received 10 awards and an honorable mention at the Illinois Community College Journalism Association (ICCJA) 36th Annual Spring Conference on April 7-8.

The conference, which was held at Moraine Valley Community College, honored journalism students from community colleges throughout Illinois.

The Blazer won the first-place Mike Foster Award for Overall Excellence for Division II, which includes newspapers from schools of over 5,000 students.

JJC students also earned individual awards. Kat Boehle of Cornell earned five awards: First place for photo spread, second place for sports photo, third place for editorial, third place for computer graphic and an honorable mention for arts; Carlos Enriquez of Joliet won three awards: Second place for sports news, sports feature and sports opinion; Rachel Stella of Channahon earned a second place for feature; and Tommy Stokke of Minooka took first place for sports feature.
