JJC to Host First Fall Festival and Farmers Market Sept. 8

Joliet Junior College will host its first-ever fall festival and farmers market on Sept. 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Greenhouse Facility on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

The event, called GROW: JJC Fall Festival & Farmer’s Market, will feature local famers and producers of sustainable food, a food tasting and demonstration by JJC chefs, and tours of the greenhouse. Local farmers will have products for sale including meat products, beans, grains, flowers, locally grown vegetables, fruits, handmade items, and soaps made from homegrown lavender.

In addition, activities will include crafts, games and activities for kids of all ages; local entertainment by bluegrass band Cat Tails; and Doug Swenson, acoustic guitarist; and information about sustainability educational programs at JJC.

his event is made possible by a grant from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and is part of the college’s GROW series of events.

JJC received the grant in 2009 to investigate and understand the local foods status within and around the JJC region and to develop local foods curriculum as part of the college’s existing education programs.
