You’re Invited: Campus Center Grand Opening Sept. 15

The community is invited to attend the grand opening for the Joliet Junior College Campus Center on Thursday, Sept. 15, on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Campus Center with an alumni bell and commemorative brick rededication followed by a breakfast. A formal dedication will begin at 3 p.m. in the cafeteria with guest speakers and a ribbon cutting.

From 4 to 6 p.m. the department of Foundation and Alumni Relations will host an open house in the Institutional Advancement office on the third floor of Campus Center.

Donors and alumni will have the opportunity to tour the new offices and meet with foundation and alumni staff.

After a year and a half of construction, the 115,000 square-foot Campus Center opened in late June as one of seven major projects in the college’s $220 million master plan. The project was financed through a $70 million bond supported by student fees.

The Campus Center offers centralized student services with Admissions, Financial Aid, Counseling, a new cafeteria with seating for 400 people and bookstore all located on the first floor.

The second floor is home to the new library with expanded computer workshops and new group study rooms. Located on the third floor are multiple departments including Human Resources, Business and Auxiliary Services as well as the President’s Suite and administrative offices.

The building incorporates several features designed to meet LEED Gold certification standards. In addition to LED lighting fixtures and skylights to utilize natural light, it is heated and cooled through the use of geothermal energy, which takes advantage of the earth’s constant temperature to reduce the use of other energy sources.

Other highlights of the Campus Center include green roofs accessible from the second and third floors and approximately 650 additional parking spaces. Also, the location of Campus Center connects the two main academic wings of the college.

Guests are welcome to take self-guided tours of the Campus Center from 2 to 5 p.m.
