Exercise is Medicine Wellness Talk Nov. 9

Joliet Junior College (JJC) will host a health and wellness talk on “Exercise is Medicine: Your Prescription to a Healthier Life” on Wednesday, Nov. 9, from noon to 1 p.m. in the library on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

The goal of the initiative is to encourage JJC students, faculty, staff and the community to view physical activity as an integral component in the prevention and treatment of diseases and chronic illnesses says David Opon, JJC physical education professor.

Opon and Nancy DeRoss, associate professor of Natural Sciences, will host the presentation in room A-2003.
It is the first of a series of lectures, panel discussions and presentations in continuation of the college’s involvement in the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative.

The presentation will provide an overview of the initiative and the role physicians and health educators play in EIM.  The talk will also discuss the importance of physical activity to overall health and in the prevention and treatment of chronic illnesses.

Led by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), JJC kicked off the initiative last September with a series of physical activities and demonstrations, including Zumba, Butts and Guts, kickboxing, Pilates, step aerobics, and Boot Camp.

This year, in conjunction with the college’s library, four to six sessions will be held exploring topics such as women’s health, social media and its role in health and wellness, body image in the media and advertising, sleep and the correlation in obesity, exercise with pets, and music and exercise.

A Zumba demonstration will be held on Nov. 14, on the Bridge on the Main Campus led by JJC student and certified Zumba instructor Victoria Carrillo.
