Annual GR2012: Celebrating Sustainability Festival at JJC May 19

The annual GR2012: Celebrating Sustainability Festival will be held Saturday, May 19, at the Joliet Junior College Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.
Scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine, GR2012 is a free family event that celebrates and explores sustainable practices, technologies and initiatives happening in and around Will County.
The festival will feature activities, displays, speakers, demonstrations, entertainment, and more, including Recyclepalooza from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Items that will be accepted include electronics, clothing, fabrics and shoes of all types, working or gently used household goods, jewelry, medical equipment, and scrap metal. For a comprehensive list and additional details, visit
From 4 to 7 p.m., a Grand Picnic Community Party will be held. Festival-goers are invited to bring their own picnic basket and a blanket and listen to the sounds of the local band Hoots and Hellmouth.
Speaker presentation topics include: The Sustainable Suburb: From Oak Park to Schaumburg to Joliet; Water Conservation and Efficiency for Northeastern Illinois; Basic Canning; Leed Certification for Neighborhood Design; and Alternately Fueled Vehicles Today, to name a few. Around 75 exhibitors will also be on hand throughout the day.
Will County students will also exhibit artwork exploring the topics of sustainability and sustainable communities in the GR2012 Celebrating Sustainability Student Art Exhibit, on display May 1 through May 19.
Pieces will be on display at Gallery 7, 116 N. Chicago St. in downtown Joliet. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday and the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. On the day of the festival, the exhibit will be featured on the JJC Main Campus.
An opening reception will be held at Gallery 7 on Sunday, May 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. The public is welcome to attend both the exhibit and reception at no charge. Merit awards for exhibited artwork will be given in three age categories: kindergarten through 5th grade; junior high; and high school. Awards will be presented May 19 at noon on the festival’s Main Stage.
