JJC Student Newspaper Takes Top Honors at Journalism Conference

Joliet Junior College (JJC) students took top honors at the Illinois Community College Journalism Association’s (ICCJA) 37th Annual Spring Conference on March 29-30.
The student newspaper, the Blazer, received the third-place Mike Foster Award for Overall Excellence for Division II.
Of the 22 colleges that attended the conference, JJC received the most awards, said Kat Boehle, editor of the Blazer.
In total, JJC students received 14 awards and four honorable mentions. Of those, Boehle, of Cornell, received nine awards and three honorable mentions: first and second place for news; first and second place editorial; first place for sports feature; second place for sports news; second place for feature; third place for photo spread; and third place for advertising design.
Award recipients also included: Ryan Miller of Minooka, who earned first place for layout; Carlos Enriquez of Plainfield, who earned third place for opinion and third place for sports news; Eric Monahan of Seneca, who earned second place for sports opinion and third place for sports feature; and Carlos Williamson of Bolingbrook who earned an honorable mention.
“The conference was an amazing experience,” said Boehle. “I’m so proud of everyone who works and writes for the paper and it was so awesome to see everyone being recognized for his or her talent.”
