JJC Chamber Singers and JJC Chorale Concert May 12

The Joliet Junior College (JJC) Fine Arts Department presents the JJC Chamber Singers and the JJC Chorale in concert together on Saturday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

The concert, entitled “My Soul and Body Sing: A Celebration of Life and Love,” is directed by Philip Spencer, JJC professor of music.

The concert will feature “A German Requiem, op. 45” by Johannes Brahms, one of the world’s best loved and most performed choral works. The choirs will sing the work in English in a new edition faithful to the musical intentions of Brahms. The choir will also be accompanied by Brahms’ own arrangement for two pianos, which highlights the choral aspects of the piece.

Dr. Tracey Ford, JJC adjunct faculty of music, will join the choirs as soprano soloist along with special guest members of the Chancel Choir from St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Naperville.

In addition to performing “A German Requiem,” the chamber singers will perform three songs by George Gershwin in vocal jazz arrangements: “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” “Love Walked In,” and “Fascinating Rhythm.”

The chorale will also perform three additional songs; each is a love song arranged by American composers including “Seasons of Love,” from the musical “Rent.”

To conclude the concert, the choirs will combine to perform the lively African-American Spiritual, “Ain’t No Grave Can Hold My Body Down.”

Tickets for adults are $5, $4 for senior citizens, JJC faculty and staff, and non-JJC students, and $2 for JJC students.

The concert will also be performed on Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Naperville.
