JJC to Participate in 2013 Relay for Life

It’s an evening of hope, togetherness, remembrance and love: Relay for Life’s 12-hour event is set to take off Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m. for Joliet Junior College and its sister institutions, Lewis University and the University of St. Francis.

The American Cancer Society event will take place at Lewis University, located at 1 University Parkway in Romeoville, Ill., in the field house.
JJC Relay for Life organizer Amy Sims said every year’s ambiance has always been full of enthusiasm.
“The majority of people are excited, upbeat, and hopeful,” she said. “The whole event centers around hope and support.”
Sims, who is also coordinator of Student Activities and Holistic Wellness at JJC, added that the affair could be somber at times – especially during the luminary ceremony, when loved ones who have passed away from cancer are honored. Luminaries also honor those who have fought or are still fighting cancer.
Between the three schools, Sims said 161 participants are signed up and have raised $4,766 as of March 20. Out of the 32 total teams, JJC represents four.
Last year, the three schools raised a total of $34,000. This year, the goal is to raise $37,000.
According to Sims, teams consist of between six and 12 people.
“I think it’s a wonderful community event with our sister institutions here in the Joliet and Romeoville area,” Sims said. “I believe that student participation is a way for them to step up and support their community as a whole, support their family, friends, and loved ones.”
