The public is invited to attend the Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department’s annual Spring Jazz Concert on Friday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.
The concert will feature the college’s jazz band under the direction of Mr. Charles Morgan with special guest soloist Richard Moore on tenor saxophone. The guest band, which will open the show at 7:30 p.m., is the Minooka High School Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Rick Anderson.
The JJC Jazz Band will perform “A Mis Abuelos” by Arturo Sandoval, “The Blues” by Don Ellis, “No Time Like the Present” and “Fun Time” by Sammy Nestico, “Greener Pastures” by Lenny Stack, “Is There Life After Bebop?” by Tom Kubis, “Absolutely Awesome ” by Lennie Niehaus, “I-80 Shuffle” by Andy Classen, ““Goodbye Porkpie Hat” by Charles Mingus, and “Swingin’ for the Fences” by Gordon Goodwin.
Student soloists will include Mark Grossi (Naperville), on alto sax; Chad Taylor (Ottawa) and Nancy Lehman (Joliet) on tenor saxophone; Kerry Erb (Joliet) on baritone sax; Ron Magiera (New Lenox) and Steve Grabavoy (Naperville) on trumpet; William Cooper (Joliet) and Paul Hanko (New Lenox) on trombone; and Janice Murphy (Orland Park) on piano.
Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for senior citizens, non-JJC students, JJC faculty and staff; and $2 for JJC students.
The JJC Jazz Band is a community jazz band and participation is open to all residents of District 525 who play a typical jazz band instrument. The class may be taken for credit or non-credit. For more information, contact the Fine Arts Department at 815-280-2223.
