Free sandwiches (Aug. 28) and walking tacos (Aug. 29) will be distributed to students during Welcome Week until supplies run out, according to Pam Dilday, director of student activities and campus life.

Activities for Wednesday, Aug. 28 will include: a tie-dye T-shirt booth, free shaved ice treats, and a dunk tank, sponsored by JJC’s Student Government. For the dunk tank, students can pay 25 cents a throw, or $1 for five throws. All money collected from the dunk tank will be donated to Morningstar Mission of Joliet. Students can also enjoy live Caribbean World Music on Wednesday.

Music by Suenos Jazz will entertain students on Thursday. Other activities on Aug. 29 include: a spin art sunglasses booth, a caricature drawing station, and the dunk tank.

In addition to these activities, there will be giveaways each day. All Welcome Week events will begin at 11 a.m. and continue through the afternoon.

“Welcome Week is always very festive, with a lot of energy – it’s a part of college history,” Dilday said. “Welcome Week is our way of welcoming new students to JJC. The students walk out; the music makes it fun. It’s just a good time.”

Welcome Week has been going on for more than 20 years at JJC. Last year, Dilday said more than 500 students took part in Welcome Week.

Before Welcome Week activities begin, new students are invited to an informational lunch on the Main Campus in Room A-1002 on Tuesday, Aug. 27. There will be free food and presentations every 30 minutes from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Dilday said students in attendance would meet several JJC staff members and learn about resources offered at JJC. Students who attend will be eligible for door prizes and be entered into a raffle.
