Culinary Student Takes Top Prize at Haunted Cupcake Competition

Culinary Arts student Johanna Wyss recently won Pastry Chicago’s Haunted Cupcake Competition at the Chicago Fine Chocolate and Dessert Show held at Navy Pier in Chicago, beating out 50 others competitors with her winning cupcake creation.

Preparing for the competition took a lot of time and hard work, but Wyss, a first-time competitor, said she was inspired by culinary arts instructors Andy Chlebana and Mark Muszynski who provided guidance and feedback.

“The week of the competition sleep was scant and not a moment of free time was to be spared, as I am currently working two jobs and tried to dedicate every moment not at work to the competition,” Wyss said. “The vindication of winning made it feel very worthwhile and made me appreciate all the learning and help I have received at school and work.”

Wyss added that she has had a growing interest in competing lately, and this competition seemed like an appropriate place to start since Halloween is a big deal to her.

After JJC, Wyss will study cake decorating at the French Pastry School and hopes to continue to work at Creative Cakes in Tinley Park.
