JJC Early Childhood Center Achieves NAEYC Accreditation

The JJC Early Childhood Center recently achieved accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the highest level of certification possible for a childcare school or facility.

ECC Manager Bev Cavanaugh holds the NAEYC accreditation plaque.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this major accomplishment,” said ECC Manager Bev Cavanaugh. “Due to the hard work and dedication of all our staff, we achieved outstanding scores that reflect the quality and high standards of the ECC. There is no greater achievement in the world of early childhood care and education. ”

Founded in 1926, NAEYC’s mission is to serve and act on behalf of the needs, rights and well-being of all young children. They set national standards of excellence for early childhood programs and professionals; convene diverse thought leaders, teachers and other practitioners, researchers, and other stakeholders; disseminate information on best practices; and advocate for a well-financed, high quality system of early childhood education for all young children.

Cavanaugh said that the process of seeking accreditation through NAEYC is rigorous and time-intensive.

“The entire process took three years to complete, including one year of self-study, then the initial application, followed by application for candidacy, followed by the site visit, and concluding with the wait for the final report,” she said.

NAEYC evaluates a childcare facility on 10 standards: relationships, curriculum, teaching, assessment, heath, teachers, families, community relationships, physical environment, and leadership/management.

The ECC received 100% on eight out of the 10 standards and 100-plus on six of those areas, indicating that the ECC is already implementing “emerging criteria”, or practices that are so advanced that they aren’t yet included in NAEYC standards.

“Very few other childcare facilities in this area have achieved NAEYC accreditation,” said Cavanaugh. “If you’re looking for one of the state’s top-ranked facilities where your young children will receive the highest quality care and education, look no further than the ECC.”

The ECC serves children ages two-and-a-half to five years old, and is open to community members as well as the employees and students of JJC.
