Joliet Junior College will celebrate the openings of its new Veterans Resource Center and Tutoring and Learning Center with two ribbon cuttings on Sept. 17 on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.  The Veterans Resource Center, located on the first floor of the C-Building, will host its ribbon cutting at 1 p.m., and the Tutoring and Learning Center, located on the second floor of the C-Building, will host its ribbon cutting at 2 p.m.
JJC began constructing these facilities last year as part of the college’s 2013 Master Plan update. Both spaces reside in the area that formerly housed the Nursing and Allied Health Department before it was moved to the recently constructed Health Professions Center in January 2013.
The Veterans Resource Center is 1,700 square feet and provides a dedicated area for veterans to gather and socialize, study, have computer access, and space for counseling and meetings. The new center has a reception area, counseling room, computer stations and conference room.
The space is open to all veterans attending the college. Around 300 student veterans use their veteran educational benefits each semester at JJC.
The Tutoring and Learning Center is 17,900 square feet and consolidates several tutoring resources that were previously spread across the college, including the Academic Skills Center, Speaking Center, Math Learning Center, Writing and Reading Center, and Learning English for Academic Purposes Center (LEAP).
The center also has 91 computer stations and 10 separate spaces for group or individual tutoring sessions, workshops, and trainings.
Both projects were identified as priorities for JJC as they will meet critical needs for students and align with the goals of the college’s strategic plan.
