Job seekers who have training, education or experience in the skilled trades industry are invited to Joliet Junior College’s Skilled Trades Career Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. The fair will take place in the T-Concourse, with more than 25 employers participating.
Layton Cooper, JJC employer relations and internship coordinator, said the Skilled Trades Career Fair is a perfect opportunity for both students and skilled trades workers to network and find out more about the employers in the local area. Attendees should dress professionally and bring their resumes.
“There are a lot of opportunities out there for employment,” Cooper added. “The Skilled Trades Fair is a perfect place to get a business card, a name, a face, and stay in contact with the employer if you ever decide you want to apply for a position within that company.”
Careers in the skilled trades field are on the rise, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Manufacturing engineer positions, for example, should rise by 19 percent by 2020. Other positions, such as automotive repairers, will increase by 13 percent. According to the American Welding Society, there will be a need for more than 200,000 welders in the U.S. by 2020. These are only a few examples of many in-demand skilled trades careers.
Cody Hambly, a student lab technician in JJC’s manufacturing program, said he hopes the Skilled Trades Fair generates a lot of interest.
“If you go to the Skilled Trades Fair, all those companies are looking to recruit because there’s so many jobs out there,” he said.
Some participating employers at JJC’s Skilled Trades Fair will include: Argonne National Laboratory, BP US Pipeline & Logistics, Clyde’s Delicious Donuts, Goodyear Commercial Tire & Service Center, Mahoney Environmental, MKD Electric, Prinova USA, Roll Machining Technologies, The Home Depot Supply Chain, Wrigley, and Yoshino America Corporation.
