Like many college students, Rosa Chavez worked hard to get where she is today. As a JJC transfer student now studying at Lewis University, it took her three years to save up enough money so that she could begin her college career.
Chavez didn’t want finances to stand in the way of her college education again. So, shortly after she became a student, she sought out financial assistance. That’s when she learned about the hundreds of scholarships available exclusively to JJC students.
“To be honest, I didn’t know that these JJC scholarships existed. I always knew there were scholarships out there, but I applied for many of the private ones and never heard back,” Chavez said. “I applied for eleven JJC scholarships and received two of them. They were a very big help.”
Thanks to the scholarships she received, and in addition to her academic success, Chavez was able to transfer to Lewis one semester earlier than she was expecting.
The JJC scholarship application requires students to input their basic information, answer questions about their status as a JJC student, and respond to three mandatory essay questions. Students may have to answer additional essay questions depending on which scholarships they choose to apply for.
Chavez said that although writing the scholarship essays was challenging, the hard work she put in to them paid off.
“The essays were a challenge because I had a lot of other commitments in my life and I was busy,” she said. “But I wanted to do something for myself. I said, ‘This is going to be for my future.’ So, I put 100 percent of my effort into it and I overcame it.”
JJC scholarships are available to students of all different majors, academic backgrounds and financial situations. Any future or current JJC student can apply. Current students who plan to transfer in Fall 2015 can also apply.
JJC scholarships range between $250 and $4,000. Students received $794,760 in total scholarship money for fiscal year 2014. Scholarship money offsets the cost of books, tuition and other fees.
The scholarship application process begins at www.jjc.edu/scholarships. All scholarships must be submitted by April 1, 2015. For questions, contact JJC Scholarship Specialist Julie Allsopp at 815-280-6620 or email@example.com.
