Community Invited to Celebrate Earth Month this April at JJC Events

Joliet Junior College invites the community to celebrate Earth Month and the 45th anniversary of Earth Day this April by participating in a number of events at the college’s Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. JJC’s Students for a Sustainable Future, along with other student and community groups have organized many presentations, activities, tours, and more to celebrate sustainability.

“Sustainability is important because it promotes healthy people, a healthy community and a healthy earth. JJC is hosting these events not only to help celebrate Earth Month, but to make others more aware of sustainability in general,” said JJC Sustainability Coordinator Maria Anna Rafac.

One of the first Earth Month activities at JJC is Recyclepalooza, a collection event on Saturday, April 11, where people can safely bring in products like household hazardous waste, including yard chemicals, paint, antifreeze, and other flammable chemicals to be recycled. Other materials being accepted at Recyclepalooza include scrap metal, old medical equipment, clothing, home goods, foam plastics, and more.

The community also has two chances to tour the sustainable features at JJC’s Main Campus this month. On Tuesday, April 14, the public will get to tour the LEED Gold certified Campus Center, and on Thursday, April 23, the public can tour JJC’s natural areas.

A restoration work day, a recycled art show, a sustainability expo, and a lecture about legume plants are just a few of the other Earth Month activities planned for April.
