Six Joliet Junior College floral design students took top spots in the Michigan State Floral Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan this past March, including JJC student Marlem Martinez of Joliet who won first place.
Other JJC winners included Faith Damm of Frankfort, taking third place; Sarah Todus of Oswego, taking fourth place; Laura Rice of Homer Glen, taking fifth place; Griselda Olmedo of Joliet, taking sixth place; and Lauri Smith of New Lenox, taking seventh place.
In the more than five years that JJC has participated in this competition, at least one JJC student has always placed in the top three, according to Donna Theimer, team coach and JJC design instructor.
“This year, our JJC student floral designs were outstanding,” Theimer said. “They represented JJC’s floral program extremely well. I was very proud of all their floral creations and their storyboards.”
At the conference, students were challenged to come up with an event, create a floral arrangement for it, and put together a storyboard – a presentation with a description of their event, what inspired their floral arrangement, and why they decided to go with their design.
In addition to their classes, JJC floral design students created arrangements for 19 local weddings and other events to prepare for the conference.
Now that the competition is over, Theimer said two of her students, Martinez and Smith, are hard at work preparing for another competition: the Student Chapter of the American Institute of Floral Design (SAIFD)’s national contest and symposium, which will take place this June in Denver, Colorado.
