The event is part of the department’s efforts for the Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Illinois Special Olympics. Illinois Law enforcement officers raised over $3.5 million last year to provide significant support to the mission of Special Olympics Illinois.

“Through Special Olympics, athletes with intellectual disabilities enhance their physical fitness, motor skills, self-confidence and self-image,” said Officer Randy Graves. “The athletes carry these benefits into their daily lives at home, in school, on the job, and in the community. Families become stronger, volunteers derive satisfaction from working with the athletes and their families.

In 2014, the department raised a total of $5,500 for Special Olympics through all fundraising efforts. For 2015, the department hopes to raise at least $6,000.
