The Joliet Junior College women’s soccer team was recently recognized for donating coloring books, crayons and fleece blankets to the pediatric wards of Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, and Edward Hospital in Naperville.
This donation is a part of the “More Than An Athlete” campaign that is organized through the JJC Athletic Department and its student athlete advisory council. Every year, the Athletic Department manages a wide range of community service projects that allow student athletes to volunteer or donate to local organizations within the community.
In addition to the women’s soccer team, this year’s men and women’s basketball teams donated to Toys for Tots this past winter; the cross country team donated to a local food bank; and the softball team is planning to host two events to raise money for Bear Necessities, a pediatric cancer foundation.
“We believe it’s important for our athletes to make an impact off the field and in our community,” said Kerri O’Shea, JJC Women’s Athletic Coordinator and supervisor of the student athlete advisory council. “This program allows for us to create well-rounded student athletes and enhance the overall learning experience while building character. We area always looking for ways to motivate our athletes to be leaders and work together on ways to give back while making a difference in someone’s life.”
