JJC Board Members Honored by Illinois Community College Trustee Association

One current Joliet Junior College trustee and one former trustee were honored in June by the Illinois Community College Trustee Association.

Longtime trustee Robert Wunderlich, currently chair of the JJC Board of Trustees, received a service award recognizing his 40 years of service as a trustee. Wunderlich first joined the JJC board in 1977, and has served consecutive terms ever since.

“I’m proud of a number of successes that have happened at JJC during my tenure as a trustee,” Wunderlich said. “Student enrollment has steadily risen and we have added more facilities around the district to support a broader range of residents. I’m extremely proud of the investments we’ve made in our facilities. We’ve had enormous growth in that area, and have steadily developed our infrastructure to promote state-of-the-art classrooms and other campus spaces for students and our communities to use.”

Former trustee Jeff May, who stepped down from the board in 2015 , received the certificate of merit award for his dedicated service to the JJC board for nearly 16 years.

“I was honored to have been recognized by trustees from around the state,” said May. “It was great to catching up with this dedicated group who selflessly give their time and talent to help ensure that everyone has equal access to higher education.  I will look back at my time serving the community college system as one of the highlights of my life.”

Additionally, JJC Board Administrative Assistant Joan Tierney was a finalist for the award of professional board staff member, which recognizes the work of those who provide administrative support to trustees. Tierney retired from her full-time role at the college in 2013, but continues to support the board in a part-time capacity.

“It’s wonderful to see our board members be recognized for their dedication to the college,” said Interim JJC President Dr. Judy Mitchell. “Our trustees volunteer their time and expertise to lead the college into the future. Trustee Wunderlich and former Trustee May have been key leaders in shaping our vision and we are grateful for their service.”
