Joliet Junior College is hosting several events for the month of April in celebration of Earth Month 2017 on the college’s Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. JJC’s Students for a Sustainable Future, along with a consortium of campus student and community groups have organized many presentations, activities, tours and more to celebrate sustainability. The community is invited to attend all of these events. Many of these activities are free.
According to JJC Sustainability Coordinator Maria Anna Rafac, the goal for Earth Month is to highlight the importance of sustainability and to inspire students and community members alike to increase their understanding and knowledge of sustainability.
“Now more than ever our communities need to come together,” Rafac said. “We have the power to individually make little changes in our daily lives as well as together make large changes in our country. We need to stand up for what is right and let our voices be heard. This is about the future of mankind and the quality of life on this planet. We must employ systems thinking to see how our actions are linked to outcomes. We must consider the environment, economics and equity in our decisions: People Planet Profit!”
One of the most interactive events during Earth Month will be this year’s Earth Day Expo, on Friday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the JJC Bridge. There, students and community members can meet local, environmental organizations, view the college’s Recycled Art Show, and enjoy crafts and free food.
The community also has two chances to tour the sustainable features at JJC’s Main Campus this month. On Thursday, April 20, the public can tour JJC’s natural areas and on Wednesday, April 26, the public will get to tour the LEED Gold certified Campus Center.
