JJC Jazz Band to Perform Spring Concert on May 5

The Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department will present its annual Spring Jazz Concert on Friday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus at 1215 Houbolt Road, Joliet. The jazz band is under the direction of JJC Fine Arts Assistant Professor Rich Moore.

In addition to the JJC Jazz Band, the Coal City High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Cameron Kovotsky, will make a guest appearance during the beginning of the concert.

JJC Student soloists include Crystal Lyons of Plainfield, vocalist; Leif Sebby of Plainfield on alto saxophone; Richard Farnsworth of Bolingbrook and Nancy Lehman of Joliet on tenor saxophone; Ron Magiera of New Lenox and Dave Griesemer of Frankfort on trumpet; Samantha Steagerman of Manhattan and Jonathan Melger of Bolingbrook on trombone; Dana Goodman of Romeoville, James Stegall of Joliet and Michael Kovach of Joliet on drums; Nick Kemp-Bystrzryki of New Lenox on guitar, and Janice Murphy of Orland Park and Kevin Campbell of Joliet on piano.

The jazz band will perform:

  • “Salt Peanuts” by Dizzy Gillespie
  • “I’m Beginning to See the Light” by Rory Bourke
  • “Tanga” by Dizzy Gillespie
  • “Work Song” by Nat Adderley
  • “Darn That Dream” by Jimmy van Heusen and Eddie DeLange
  • “All the Things You Are” by Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern
  • “Milestones” by Miles Davis
  • “A Night in Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie
  • “Some Skunk Funk” by Randy Brecker

Admission to the concert is $5 for adults; $4 for senior citizens, non-JJC students, JJC faculty and staff; and $2 for JJC students.

The jazz band is made up of both JJC students and community members. The group meets on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9:45 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters.
