JJC Student Newspaper Recognized for Outstanding Journalism

For the second consecutive year, Joliet Junior College’s student newspaper, The Blazer, won 18 awards at the Illinois Community College Journalism Association’s (ICCJA) annual spring conference in April.

The conference, which was held at Clark Community College, honored journalism students from community colleges throughout Illinois.

Award recipients included:

  • Elias Albert of New Lenox, first place in sports column and sports news
  • Emma Carter of Homer Glen, honorable mention for news column
  • Becca Dvorak, honorable mention for news story
  • Former student Shanielle Fulton of Joliet (formerly of Detroit), honorable mention for both feature writing and news column
  • Andrew Hanton of Plainfield; second place for best news photo
  • Jens Schommer of New Lenox, second place for best news photo
  • Jarek Martinez of Plainfield, third place for reporter of the year and honorable mention for both feature writing and news story
  • Leonardo Mireles, third place in the editorial cartoon category
  • Adam Tumino, first place in sports column, sports news, and sports feature
  • Madeline Wheaton of Plainfield, honorable mention for page design

The Blazer as a whole took home an honorable mention for Best in Show Division I and third place for front-page design.
